How Airbnb gave tennis fans the ultimate home advantage.
Airbnb helps people feel at home all around the world. As an official partner of the Australian Open, we wanted to give tennis fans that same feeling—at the one and only Melbourne Park. By bringing the Airbnb philosophy of belonging to the biggest event of summer, we could make the Australian Open even more open. That was our Airbnb advantage. Or, as they say in tennis, ‘Advantage Airbnb’.
We developed a unique range of experiences and activations that would allow spectators to become even more immersed in the sport they love. From walking in the footsteps of the Williams sisters with an all access tour of Rod Laver Arena, to pulling up a seat at a press conference to hear the words of the winners firsthand, to putting your couch commentary to the test alongside John McEnroe and the commentary team. There was a Grand Slam Sleepover, the Breakpoint Tennis Club, and the Home Advantage initiative encouraging tennis players to earn money by listing their homes on Airbnb while they’re on tour.
All of these touchpoints were brought together with a striking visual approach that was inspired by both the Australian Open and the Australian summer. High contrast colours, hard light, long shadows, neat geometry and, of course, the iconic centre court.
